The Municipality of Rotterdam has sold a unique and prestigious property in the heart of Rotterdam to Weverskade Real Estate (Weverskade). The sale process was conducted through a public tender with preselection. With the successful transaction of this remarkable and characteristic building, an important part of Rotterdam’s real estate heritage has been entrusted to the new owner.
The property in question is the former Municipal Library from 1923, an impressive municipal monument locally known as Nieuwemarkt 1 in Rotterdam. In 2014, a large-scale renovation took place, after which the building was put to use for educational purposes by Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR). The property is fully and long-term leased to the EUR.
Weverskade is an internationally operating investor with a substantial real estate portfolio. Their focus is on innovative and sustainable real estate products in the fields of commercial property and (care) housing, aligning with their mission to leave the world in a better state.
Nieuwemarkt perfectly aligns with Weverskade’s ambition, not only as an investment, but also as a socially relevant property that honors the city and its history. This remarkable building has been acquired to be held in ownership for the long term and to continue flourishing with respect for its function, architecture, and tenant.
Weverskade was advised by MADE Real Estate. The Municipality of Rotterdam was legally assisted in this transaction by Pillar Notaries and commercially advised by BRiQ.
